What are name servers (NS) and how do they work?

24 0 0

If the domain is the "address" of your site, and the hosting is the "home" where the files reside, nameservers are the pointers that connect the two. Without them, the internet wouldn't know which server to look for your site's content when someone types your domain name into their browser.

1. Technical definition

Nameservers are an integral part of the DNS system (Domain Name System). They are specialized servers that store the DNS records of a domain.

They usually come in pairs of at least two, to ensure redundancy (if one fails, the other takes over the request). Example format:

  • ns1.tickethelp.ro

  • ns2.tickethelp.ro

2. The role of nameservers

Their main role is to "translate" the domain name (easy for humans to remember) to the server's IP address (easy for computers to read).

  • When you enter tickethelp.ro, the browser asks the nameservers: "At what IP address is this site located?".

  • The nameservers respond with the host server address, and the site loads.

3. When should you change nameservers?

You must update these records in the domain control panel in the following situations:

  1. You bought the domain from one provider and hosting from another.

  2. You have moved your site to a new server (migration).

  3. You are using an external firewall or CDN (such as Cloudflare).

4. Where do you find the TicketHelp nameservers?

If you have purchased a hosting package from us, you will find the necessary data:

  • In the welcome email titled "Your new hosting account data".

  • In your customer account, under Services -> Hosting Details section.

5. Important: Propagation time

After you save the new nameservers, the change is not applied instantly. There is a period called propagation, which can take 24 to 48 hours, during which servers around the world update their "book" with your new location.
