What is a web domain and how does it work? (Complete Guide)

24 0 0

If you are getting ready to launch your online presence, the first essential step is to understand the concept of web domain. This is not just an address, but your digital identity on the Internet.

1. Web Domain Definition

In simple terms, a domain name is the address that users type into their browser to access your website (for example, tickethelp.ro).

Technically, the Internet works based on IP addresses (strings of numbers like 192.168.1.1). Because these numbers are hard to remember, the Domain Name System (DNS) was created, which works like a "phone book" by translating easy-to-read names into numeric IP addresses.

2. The structure of a domain

A web domain usually consists of two main elements:

  • Domain name: The part chosen by you (eg: business name).

  • Extension (TLD - Top Level Domain): The part after the dot (eg: .ro, .com, .net).

There are several types of extensions:

  • ccTLD (Country Code TLD): Specific to a country (eg: .ro for Romania).

  • gTLD (Generic TLD): General extensions (eg: .com, .org).

  • nTLD (New TLD): Modern extensions (eg: .tech, .online, .shop).

3. Difference between Domain and Web Hosting (Hosting)

A common confusion is between domain and hosting. Using the analogy of a house:

  • The domain is the address (street and number) that tells the world where to find you.

  • Web Hosting is the physical land/house where your website files are stored.

4. How does the access process work?

When someone types your domain into their browser, the process is instant:

  1. The browser sends a request to a DNS server.

  2. The DNS server looks up the IP address associated with that domain.

  3. The request is directed to the server where the site is hosted.

  4. The content of the site is displayed to the visitor.
