What is the EPP code and what is it used for?

24 0 0

If you have decided to move your domain from one registrar to another, you will surely come across the term EPP Code (Extensible Provisioning Protocol). This is one of the most important security elements in managing web domains.

1. EPP Code Definition

EPP Code (also known as Auth-Code, Authorization Key or Transfer Code) is a password unique, generated by the current registrar, which serves as proof of domain ownership.

2. Role of the EPP Code

The main role of this code is to authorize the transfer of a domain between two different providers. Without this code, no transfer request can be initiated or completed.

The system was created to prevent domain hijacking, ensuring that only the rightful owner can move the domain to another company.

3. How do you get the EPP Code?

The process depends on your domain extension:

  • International domains (.com, .net, .org, etc.): The code can usually be generated directly from the domain's administration panel, in the "Management" or "Transfer" section.

  • Domains .ro: The EPP code can be obtained from the website of the national registry (ROTLD), by accessing the "Administration of Domains" section and requesting the authorization key, which will be sent to the e-mail address of the holder.

4. Conditions for using the code

For a transfer to be successful using the EPP code, you must ensure that:

  1. The domain is unlocked: Check if the domain status is "Unlocked" or "Active".

  2. Privacy protection is disabled: Sometimes Whois data hiding services can block the process.

  3. Domain age: Most extensions cannot be transferred if they were recently registered or transferred (within the last 60 days).

5. Code Security

Caution! Never share the EPP code with unauthorized persons. Once someone has access to this code and the ability to unlock the domain, it can be transferred without your subsequent consent.
