What is a POP3 account and when should you use it?

POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3) is one of the oldest and most used protocols for downloading email messages from a server to a local device (computer, phone or tablet).

1. How does POP3 work?

Think of POP3 as a traditional postal service:

  1. Your device is connecting to the TicketHelp server.

  2. Download all new messages to your computer.

  3. Delete messages from server immediately after download (this is the default setting).

  4. Messages remain stored only on your device.

2. Advantages of using POP3

  • Saving server space: Since the messages are moved to your computer, you will not take up the space allocated to the hosting package. It is the ideal solution if you have an archive of thousands of emails with large attachments.

  • Offline access: You can read and organize all downloaded emails even when you don't have an active internet connection.

  • Speed: Uploading messages to the mail program is instant because the files are stored locally on the hard disk.

3. Disadvantages of POP3 (Why it is less used today)

  • Lack of synchronization: If you delete or move an email on your computer, it will not be deleted/moved on your phone.

  • Risk of data loss: If your computer's hard drive fails and you don't have a backup, you lose all your emails permanently because they no longer exist on the TicketHelp server.

  • Difficult for multiple devices: Not recommended if you want to verify the same account from laptop, phone and tablet simultaneously.

4. Technical settings for POP3 at TicketHelp

If you choose to set up a POP3 account, use the following data:

  • Receiving server: mail.domeniultau.ro

  • Port (SSL/TLS): 995

  • User: Full email address.

  • Password: Email account password.

POP3 or IMAP?

  • Choose POP3 if you use a single computer, have limited server storage and want to keep a huge local archive.

  • Choose IMAP (recommended for most users) if you want emails to be perfectly synchronized across all your devices.
